Summerlin is named after Jean Amelia Summerlin, the grandmother of Howard Hughes. Hughes bought the land back in the 1950s, around 25,000 acres of desert on the west side of Las Vegas, with no specific plan for what to do with it. The land sat largely untouched for decades while Hughes held onto it, and after his death in 1976, it passed to his company, Summa Corporation.
Planning for the community started in the late 1980s, and the first homes were sold in 1991. The Howard Hughes Corporation took over development and laid out Summerlin as a master-planned community, which means the streets, parks, schools, and shopping centers were mapped out together rather than added piece by piece. That approach is part of why the area feels organized compared to other parts of the valley. Summerlin has consistently ranked among the top-selling master-planned communities in the country since it opened.
Today, Summerlin covers about 22,500 acres and is home to more than 100,000 residents spread across more than 20 villages, each with its own parks, trails, and neighborhood feel. The community keeps growing on the western edge with newer villages like Summerlin West and Redpoint, while older areas like The Ridges and Sun City Summerlin have built up their own identities over the years. Red Rock Canyon borders the community to the west, which puts a permanent cap on how far it can expand and keeps the open desert views close to home.
